Improving Touch ID iPad 10th gen

My Touch ID is very erratic. Sometimes it works, but after a while it stops. I keep deleting and resetting Touch ID but it is still very erratic. Can anyone tell me how to make it work better? I am using the magnetic cover which partially obstructs the Touch ID button, but removing it still doesn’t improve results.

My big concern is security. By this I mean that when the Touch ID doesn’t recognize my fingerprint, it asks for my four digit passcode. This not only opens the iPad, but also my apps that are set up with Touch ID. For me, Touch ID is useless.

I wish Apple would warn buyers that they lose the on-screen Touch ID with this model. The screen-based Touch ID worked flawlessly.

Some users just have difficulty using TouchID, in particular those models of iPad that use the smaller TouchID sensor incorporated within the iPad's Sleep/Wake button. The causes for TouchID being unreliable for some users - and not others - are many. Whilst not an exhaustive list, possibilities include:

  • Very high humidity (“sweaty” fingers)
  • Very low humidity (excessively dry skin)
  • Poor fingerprint ridge-detail (excessive hand washing - or exposure to abrasive material, damaging fingerprint detail)
  • Physical injury (cuts or splits to the fingertip)

If you have naturally dry skin, try using a “light” (non greasy) and easily absorbed skin moisturiser.

Regardless of your TouchID issues, if you are concerned for the security of your iPad, you should consider changing your Passcode to use at least six digits - or a more complex alpha-numeric.
