AirPods pairing Issues and unable to reset

My AirPods are showing up as different devices. I have went through the Apple support process but was unable to resolve the issue. Both AirPods belong to one case but show up as different devices. When trying to reset the AirPods, the orange/amber never turns white or resets; it flashes orange indefinitely. Thus making resetting the AirPods impossible. I should give the insight that one AirPod is a replacement but I don’t think the AirPods were paired to each other properly 3 years ago. One airpod is stuck on very old software(3A283) and will not update while the other one successfully updates to the latest version. Pairing to the phone is only possible if only one AirPod is in the case since the orange light leaves. Even doing that the AirPods will be separate devices and listening to both is only possible with audio sharing in the control center. Following the AirPods replacement article has also been a dead-end as it also requires a reset which is not possible. The airpods are from the first generation.

Update: So the AirPods first generation somehow fixed themselves. What I did to fix them was open the case after like a day or so. I then held the reset button for about 15 seconds while opening and closing the case after few times. This lead to the AirPods finally flashing white and from there you could reset the AirPods like usual to one Bluetooth device.
