Building characters in Motion

Any way to connect a shape to a control point in a line shape? Trying to simulate the action available in Rubber Hose. Would like the hand to be positioned at the end of the wrist and as the line's control point animates, the hand will follow. Tried some linking options but not getting the results.

I'm not sure if this helps or not. But I came across this video for how to attach points in a shape to an object. I used it to make a line graph template. You might be able to use the tracking techniques in reverse, but I'm not sure. I had no idea this was possible before and it really opens up shape manipulation, especially in FCP templates.

Don't really want to track the hand to the arm, just "parent" its position to the control point in the arm (which is a line with 2 point). Trying to build a simlple character puppet. Trying to mimic the AE equivalent. New to Motion so will plod on. Has to be a way. I know mPuppet is an option but it's another subscription.

That's what I did.


Track Points will connect the ends of a line to a "null object" (usually a Crosshair image) that can be controlled with an OnScreen Control.


Simon Ubsdell recently did a *very quick* tutorial for setting up a line (ignore the animating with Motion Paths section) demonstrating the use of the crosshair image and aligning the ends of line shape.

If your line is curved, you can do the "rubber hose" effect.


My point is that after you set up the arm, you can easily attach (and animate) the hand shape to one of the ends.

I think you're maybe misunderstanding what we are talking about with track points. It's not necessarily tracking motion. The ONLY way to link an individual point of a shape to anything is to use Track Points. It's in Behaviors and then Shapes, called "Track Points" this links a shape point to another object. So in your case you could link both the end point of the arm and the position of the hand to another dummy object. You could then animate that dummy object to move the arm around.
