Messages - Bell with Forward Slash / Messages.

So, there are contradicting answers to this question so I am going to ask again for clarification.

Some say the forward slash mutes/silences an incoming message. Others say the slash un-mutes the alert/tone.

Without looking at all of my contacts the vast majority if not all "have a forward slash" through the bell and I receive an audible alert on my iPhone, Watch, iPad and Mac.

If I remove the forward slash messages are muted/silenced.

I have tested this with several people. Incoming message with slash = alert. No slash=Mute/silence.

Am I missing something here.
