Issue with naming people on photos after removing previous name

I named a person incorrectly (person 'B') on a photo (of person 'A'), which then incorrectly identified person A as person B on all of their photos.

I went into "person B" on "people and pets", selected all photos and clicked 'this is not person B".

This removed all of the link between person B and person A's photos, however I now cannot name anyone on the photos that were selected to remove person B from.

How can I correct this?

You may want to name the photos temporarily with completely different names from the ones you have used before.

use some new nicknames for them that are not yet in your contacts.

Name the photos of person A now "nickname A" and the photos of person B now temporarily "nickname B", until Photos has forgotten that the two persons are supposed to be the same.
