maps orientation always turns back to north

I would like to rotate a particular view in Maps to look at all the details I am interested in at the largest size at the same time. I need to rotate map orientation to do this, to fill the screen rectangle optimally. However as soon as I release compass after rotating, it rotates back to due north. This happens on Mac OS and on iPhone. Very frustrating. Any suggestions?
