JXL HDR files display bug in Mac OS and iOS

I have been exporting JXLs with HDR information from Lightroom the last couple of months. It all appeared fine in the beginning, but recently I have encountered a bug when trying to display these images in Photos in both Mac OS 15.1 and iOS 18.1:

  • Thumbnails do not display the HDR version of the file, but a duller version.
  • When I open an image it is dull, and it will take 1-2 seconds before the HDR version is displayed.
  • When I browse through images, it is 50-50 whether or not an image will display in HDR or not, and upon browsing through the same images again, it will change which photos are displayed correct and not.
  • Reseting the device seems to improve the 50-50 rate a bit, but is is temporary.

Anyone experiencing the same problem?

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 15.1
