apple care support with new usb-c case replacment

i have airpods pro 2nd generation w/ lightning case, however i want to get the usb-c case because all of my other devices use it. if i buy the usb-c case from the apple website to use with the airpods i have now, will the apple care i bought support the new usb-c case? will i need to buy apple care for the new case? can i get apple care for it at all? or would i need to buy whole new airpods w/ usb-c to get apple care?
