Personal hotspot issues after upgrade to Sequoia 15.1

Sometimes I'm working from a cafe using my iPhone personal hotspot for internet access. Before updating to osX 15 everything was working properly. My apps and workflow are the same -- VSCode, Chrome, MS Teams, Outlook. After update I have these problems:

  1. MacBook still connected to personal hotspot after closing the lid, and even worse -- when I open MacBook at home it still use and sometimes prefer hotspot connection over much faster home WiFi.
  2. Personal hotspot in WiFi dropdown list always have wrong battery status (always shows full, but from time to time I have popup asking me if I want to disconnect from hotspot because it has almost no battery left), wrong connection bars (always one out of four, but phone shows strong signal) and I see GPRS instead of 5G there.

What I tried so far (unsuccessfully):

  • Reset Network setting on the iPhone
  • Rename iPhone to a different name (used generic iPhone before)

Maybe there are something else to try?

Thank you

MacBook Pro 14″, macOS 15.1

I have absolutely the same situation with my Mac after the latest Mac OS update. It's sooo annoying! It happens a numerous times per day.

iPhone>Settings>Personal Hotspot>> turn it off

iPhone>Settings>Cellular>Personal Hotspot>> turn it off

Same here.

  • Signal strength and connection mode (EDGE/3G/LTE/5G) was incorrect.
  • Personal hotspot was automatically offered on the Mac (MBP M1 with macOS 15.1.1) but never connected. Note: The connection was not flaky or dropping off. It never connected in the first place.

I think I have found the solution to my problem:

  • I had family sharing on and had it set to "ask for permission". But upon connection attempts I was never asked for permission on any device, Mac or iPhone.
  • I set family sharing to "automatic" for myself, and the Mac used the iPhone as a hotspot in a second.

I hope this helps others as a workaround and helps Apple to fix this properly.

Totally same on my MBP 2020 with Sequoia 15.3.1. It frequently disconnects from my personal hotspot on my iOS 16.3 iPhone 14PM while i'm literally using my MBP doing work. Such an annoying experience.

Also the battery status of my iPhone, cellular type and signal strength are all wrongly displayed. Because I'm using full strength 5G with 95% battery as always.

Another update: things went back to broken about a week after ^^^ message. Same incorrect phone name, battery status and network type (sometime it asks to disconnect from hotspot because it falsely reports 0% battery on the phone), same sticking to hotspot network where local remembered wifi is present and cherry on top is to keep connected to hotspot with closed lid. Annoying :(
