I have an Iphone 12, with years of photos. If I get an iphone 16, how do i make sure i retain all my photos? I'm Not certain if all my photos are being backed up in iCloud.

Why are you not certain? Are you not sure that iCloud Photos is turned on?


Have you looked at iCloud.com to see what's there? You're using iOS 17? Then have you looked at the bottom of the Library view to see how many pictures have been synced?

If the number there is the same as at iCloud.com, then you can be sure all your pictures have been transferred. If it's not the same, then maybe we can help…

Do you have a Mac? If you do you can backup the iPhone (photos, mail, etc.) to it for recovery if something goes awry in the transfer.


Or you can backup it up to iCloud but you have to have purchased enough space to hold the backup. My backup with only 1788 items (photos and videos) takes up 12.61 GB of space.


Then if you need to restore to your iPhone you can use the Finder (Ventura and later) or the 3rd party iMazing app.


iMazing can extract photos from the local backup if you want.
