iMessages being deleted without action on my part

Several times now over last month or so a HUGE bunch of messages have been deleted without my asking…these for a handful of family and important contacts. Note that I have ALL my devices set to a) backup to iCloud, and b) keep “forever”.

Odder still, while these were largely intact on my iPad, both my iPhone and MacBook had these deleted.

FORTUNATELY, I noticed in time and was able to restore MOST, but not all, but accessing the “recently deleted” and pushing the restore button. Even this only restored maybe half.

Also, when I tried the “synch now” button on all devices, this made matters worse, deleting ALL messages for the 2 devices! Which again, was able to only partially restore by recovering from “recently deleted”.

The only solution was to turn off the upload to iCloud, wait for it to then DOWNLOAD all messages, then turn back on. And even then, while this worked for my iPhone, the MacBook stubbornly refused until I first did the synch now, again resulting in deletion of same messages, then wait 5 minutes, and then again RESTORE.

Finally, when I reviewed all three devices under iCloud, each showed a different number of messages stored, albeit all within maybe 50-80. Zero help or advice from Apple Support as to WHY (the heck) this happened!

HUGE problem as I rely on these for information exchanged with the handful of contacts.

Hi ebertsj,

Re: "iMessages being deleted without action on my part"

"HUGE problem as I rely on these for information exchanged with the handful of contacts".

Wondering if it could be a storage issue ? If your device(s) are short on storage, files that can be recovered may be deleted in order to keep the device(s) operating smoothly.

Eg: An iPhone generally needs at least 8 Gb available in which to operate smoothly.

A Mac needs around 50 Gg available in order to continue doing all you ask of it.

NB: iCloud storage is quite separate, from the amount of storage space on device(s)

NB: If storage ia an issue: It is wise to back-up everything securely, before you make space.

Thank you kindly for taking the time to reply, and for sharing your experience with the community. Sorry the cause of your issue has not been determined, so a solution could be found.

You may want to send feedback to reach those who work behind-the-scenes at Apple. Although they will likely not reply, and it will be of no immediate help, your feedback will reach those who can make changes. A future update may address issues, if others are also experiencing something similar.

"Survival" meanwhile: Can only suggest you might want to back-each message as received, so you always have a record ... eg: simply copy and paste into a document

Also: (if you haven't seen it already): Just discovered this Apple Support article:

Recover deleted messages in Messages on iPhone - Apple Support says:

"Once you recover a blocked conversation whose participants haven’t all turned on iMessage, incoming messages will no longer be automatically deleted."

Thanks for thoughtful response, but no issue with storage. In fact, my iPad has the lowest at some 30 gb, and this is the only one with a complete list. While my iPhone has 90 gb, and my MacBook over 150 gb. I DID contact Apple, and even got to next level support, and for the first time ever, no meaningful response (aside from some assistance in restoring, but even THAT was hit or miss, took more effort on my part to finish…

Very unusual and sad…
