I am trying to help a friend who has an iPad by transferring some video files from my Windows PC.
My background is Windows and Android and I am a little lost in the Apple world!
Ideally, I would like to connect the iPad to my PC with a USB cable and copy them over. Is this possible or, if not, what is the simplest way to achieve this (without involving iTunes)?

There is a simple way to do this with an app called “PhotoSync”, can be installed on both your PC and iPad.
You can also use Apple Devices to copy it over. Or possibly use cloud storage.

(BTW) iTunes is now discontinued. It’s now Apple Devices.

You need either iTunes or Apple Devices, or perhaps third-party software that can handle file transfer to an iPad; I'm not sure if any still exists for current versions of iPadOS and Windows. See:

Another option would be to use a cloud storage solution such as Dropbox. The files will probably be too large to send via email.

By far the simplest method to transfer files would be to download and install iCloud for Windows on the PC (this is free). Once logged-in to uour iCloud account, you can then simply use Windows Explorer to access iCloud and copy your files/photos from the PC to iCloud - and from there to the target iPad.

As an alternative, consider using Google Drive. The Google Drive App for iPad is a free download.

To use Google Drive, you will also need a Google Account (also free to create from the Google Drive App) which provides 15GB of online storage.

Just FYI, iTunes, while it's being superceded, is not discontinued. It's still avaiable and still being updated by Apple (though not often).
