It used to do that in macOS Big Sur and possibly others. Doesn't any more.

I found the answer! Like all too many functions in the modern macOS, it’s buried beneath a pile of obscurity.

Go to  → System Settings… and select Desktop & Dock. Near the top of the page is an option called Double-click a window’s title bar to. Set it to Zoom. I guess some engineer decided that double-clicking a window’s title bar should function identically to ⌥-clicking the green button.

in desktop and dock, system settings, there is an option on what to do when you double click the window title bar. Set it to Zoom.I have been using that to zoom ever since they corrupted the green dot with full screen.

yes, it did have a different function, as I noted, but now it has no function that’s useful at all to anybody. If you want to be able to zoom easily, you should change your habit patterns. I doubt that zoom will come back because even Apple isn’t implementing it correctly in some of their apps

Having the same problem. I’ve checked on my wife’s machine (also running macOS 15.1.1) and it works correctly. I called Apple for help, and it worked correctly on the tech’s machine (also running macOS 15.1.1). It’s only a problem on mine, which tells me there has to be a setting somewhere; we just need to find the dang thing!

It’s not supposed to maximize; it’s supposed to resize to fit. What’s weird is that I’ve seen it working correctly on two out of three Macs we’ve tested; I just can’t get it to work on the third (mine).

I’m baffled, I am away from my mac but I think that option-click on the green button works the same as before… what am I missing? How is it different? I know that you can click and hold and there are the new tiling options, but unless I’m grossly mistaken option-click still works.

Zoom does "maximize" a window. Maximize is not the same as Full Screen.

Option+Click still maximizes.
