Why does backing up by cable cost mobile data?

I recently tried backing up my iPhone to my PC by cable connection using the Apple Devices app, but within a few minutes got a message from my phone service provider saying i had exceeded my data limit. Why? Why should transferring data by a physical connection cost mobile data? And how can i avoid this cost?

iPhone SE, iOS 17

Something else was certainly going on. Two suggestions:
(1) The phone was set with mobile data on and therefore the backup used mobile data - the phone companiy’s suggestion..
(2) The back up included photos, although these are stored in the cloud and not on the phone. So my photos were downloaded from the cloud and then copied onto my phone. This would normally have been done via wifi but because I had mobile data switched on …
Any comments?
  1. Backing up to computer does not use Mobile Data
  2. When using iCloud Photos, the backup file does not contain your photos.

Review the apps that are using Cellular Data at Settings > Cellular. Choose the last billing period to view the data usage of each app. This should help pinpoint the culprit

No, again, backup to a PC does not use mobile data in any way. Something else entirely may have used it, but it has nothing to do with the backup.

No, if you have iCloud Photos turned on, the backup will not include them.
