Why are my app windows automatically closing for no reason?

Sometimes when I open my computer, apps that I had open will have randomly closed, forcing me to reopen them and pray my data wasn't lost. It more often happens if I have a lot of tabs or windows open, and put my computer to sleep for more than a few hours. How do I prevent this from happening?
