Logic Pro plays wrong notes

Software Midi instruments selected in Logic Pro plays the wrong notes either when using a midi controller or by clicking on the piano roll in Logic. Sometimes immediately after a new sound is selected the correct note will sound and then it'll seemingly bend to a new, incorrect note and not change from there.

I have no transpose functions in operation and I've done a factory reset on the keyboard.

I'm at a loss at to what's going on here. It makes Logic unusable to me.

Any ideas will be gratefully received.

Hi BenB, I haven't even recorded anything so no automation has been applied or recorded. By opening an Empty Project with a Software Instrument as the new track and picking a sound from the library and playing from the keyboard the correct note will play at first and then, as I'm playing, the pitch will change without any other control being applied - as if a ghost has changed the mod wheel. The piano roll continues to indicate the note I'm playing but the wrong note comes out of the speaker. I'm reasonable technical but baffled by this.
