Unable to download apps on Apple TV

I have a 1st Gen 4K Apple TV (model A1842 64Gb) and when I try to download apps, all I get is a spinning circle and the app does not download. It does not matter whether it is an old app (cloud with arrow) or new app (get). Apps all say “Works on this apple TV”. All that happens is a spinning circle and then it just times out. All existing apps work perfectly fine. Have tried connecting to a new wi-fi network, resetting the Apple TV, disconnecting power for 5 minutes, and also signing out and back in to my iCloud account to no avail. Anything else I can try ?

how to update YouTube in Apple TV box

What is your model Apple TV box?

What is its version system software (tvOS)?

The YouTube app is compatible with Apple TV HD (4th generation) or later. (Earlier models do not support YouTube anymore as an app, per 2021-03. Earlier models should still support AirPlay for YouTube, afaik.)

Apple TV has an option to update apps automatically, just like iPhone and iPad. If that option is off, or if it hasn’t done the automatic update yet, then you can do it manually through the App Store app. The current version as of today seems to be v.4.50.01 per 2024-10-23.

App updates can only be done for the Apple Account that that installed those apps. Alternatively, a secondary account may delete and re-install an app, to circumvent that.

When your issue differs from the starting question, then next time please start your own new question, instead of latching on to an existing thread. Thank you.

I also have the same exact 4K Apple TV (1st Gen 64Gb) as you and yesterday I encountered the same exact issue that you described. I tried all of the things that you tried without success too.

The only way that I was able to get apps installed on it is using a workaround where I installed or reinstalled the app that I wanted on my other 4K Apple TV (1st Gen 32Gb). The installed app would then get installed and show up on my problematic 4K 64Gb Apple TV since I have all of my Apple TV devices configured to sync. So if you have another Apple TV that you can use, I would suggest that you try this work around. Hopefully, it’ll work for you as it did for me and whatever is causing this problem will get fixed by Apple soon.

This suggestion also solved my issue. It's a bit of a nuisance having to re-add the Apple account, pick the default user, etc., and it's a scary warning about deleting the profile (am I going to lose my viewing history everywhere???), but after logging out, rebooting, logging in again, choosing the default user, etc., it appears I'm back in business and able to download/update apps again!
