Apple Watch 8 - not able to update the watchOS

I cannot update my Apple Watch 8. When I try to update the Watch by using the Watch App (Settings -> Updates) on my Iphone 8, I get the information: "First update the Iphone". I go then to the settings of the Iphone, check for updates and it informs me that "the iOS is up to date (16.7.10)".

When I try to update the Watch directly in its settings I get en error message "it's not possible to check the availability of the latest updates. An error occured while checking the availability of the updates". So it's a vicious circle.

How can I update my Apple Watch 8? (The missing upate may be the cause that the Watch has stopped measuring the temperature over 2 months ago). Thank you in advance for your hints.

watchOS 11 requires iOS 18 on the iphone

watchOS 10 requires IOS 17 on the iphone

if your iphone does not support higher than ios 16 then you can't update the watch, if you used another iphone to update the watch it would no longer work at all with the older ios 16 iphone

options

1 stay with the watchOS version you have now

2 get a new iphone that support the ios version of the watchOS version you wish to use

Thank you. On the Watch I have watchOS 9, since Iphone 8 won't get a higher version of iOS than 16 (which I currently have) I will have to live with watchOS 9.

Just a question - do you think that the fact that Apple Watch has stopped measuring the temperature (I had regular measurements until mid August) can have something to do with the OS version installed on the watch? This was the reason why I have decided tu update the watchOS in the first place.
