Apple Carplay GPS location error FIXED for Smart cars

There are many posts relating to this issue, which is where Carplay is unable to show the correct vehicle location on the map.

It seems to affect many types of vehicle in many locations - I am in the UK.

I purchased a Smart#1 EV in October 2023 and it had this problem.

With help from members of the Smart Emotion forum (based in Germany but for all Smart users) we reported the error in detail to Smart in June 2024.

Several UK owners (myself included) live near the Greenwich Meridian (0 degrees longitude) and after some experiment, one member posted his results as follows:

I had both iPhones ready to record the longitude and latitude

The one on CarPlay started pretending the longitude was 0 while the one using the iPhone GPS was closing to zero. Starting as soon was we got under -0.1 all the way to 0.

The issue is a rounding to 0 when under -0.1.

I was able to reproduce the error at exactly the same places on regular journeys.

We passed this information to Smart and I am happy to say that the latest OTA software update for the vehicles has fixed the problem.

In summary, we found that the problem was a rounding error in the car's navigation software that was rounding the location to 0 when the actual location was less than 0.1 degrees east or west of the meridian.

I hope this helps other manufacturers to solve the problem on other vehicles.

iPhone 13, iOS 18
