Beats Fit Pro disconnecting when buds put in ears

OK, I have new pair of Beats Fit Pro earbuds. I've connected them with my iphone (though that process seemed glitchy). Showing as paired/connected in Bluetooth connections list, with case open. As soon as I put the buds in my ear, they disconnect and I can't maintain any active connect. I've done a few factory resets on the case and re-paired a few times and keep getting the same result. Baffled. Now that they've been paired, I should be able to put them in and use them directly. Out of ideas.
