.mov and .mp4 changes file type to "FileTypeGroup447"

Don't understand what is happening. .mov and .mp4 changes file type to "FileTypeGroup447". Totally insane. This happens both in FCPX and in finder. Not all files. And a file can show file type .mp4 in finder but shows "FileTypeGroup447". when imported to FCPX.

As Tom said, if the file is working in FCP and this is a curiosity question, I wouldn't worry about it.

.mp4 and .mov are file extensions associated with certain "containers", which are organizational methods and metadata schemes used within video files. E.g, Quicktime is a container type. The file extension, container and codec are different things. There are several good tutorials on Youtube which explain codecs and containers. Just search on that term in Youtube.

When using the FCP Event Browser in list view, if you add the column "file type," it displays the container type. MP4 can be confusing because it is both a file extension and a container type, but as used by the FCP Event Browser in list view, it means the container type.

Likewise, the .mov file extension is normally associated with the Quicktime container type.

If you want to know more about your specific files showing the "FileTypeGroup447" as the file type, we would need to see the full metadata readout from that file as presented by MediaInfo. You can Google that to obtain and use it.
