Assistive Touch instead of Face ID for iCloud storage upgrade

My friend is trying to upgrade their iCloud storage but is being asked to confirm their choice by assistive touch rather than FaceID. This makes little sense to me, particularly because there appears to be no options to confirm anything when assistive touch is turned on. What are we missing here?
