Does Apple Music store files locally?

I just signed up for Apple Music paid subscription and started to build a favorites list. I added a few playlist and some band essentials. When i added these to my favorites it said downloading and displayed the typical download square with a circle completing. Does this action actually download and store it somewhere or they are just showing that it is being added to your favorites. I see post that asked similar questions but still not sure.
