Personal Voice setup not working on my Mac OS 15.1 - bug in initial Apple code

When I try to set up a personal voice using System Settings > Accessibility > Personal Voice > Create

(1) I enter my password/Touch ID

(2) Incorrectly the code says to check internet connection. "A one-off download of 233 MB is required to continue with Personal Voice creation." Code has a cancel button and a blue "wifi settings" button. When I click on the wifi button it just exits out of personal voice. The cancel button is no better.

Why does the message just refer only to WiFi? This seems like the developer that wrote this "trap" is rather parochial. I assume they have messed up their logic somewhere - this Apple code should be reviewed.

My Mac like many machines has an Ethernet as well as WiFi connection. I currently have an Ethernet down 90 Mbit/up 20 Mbit connection and Wifi down 50 Mbit/up 17 Mbit connection. So no good reason for the error message. The error occurs with all combinations of network settings.

What is the work around this bad piece of Apple code?

Why hasn't it been fixed? I see it has been present for >>12 months in previous Mac OS 14.

Hi Richard Gaitskell

Re: "Personal Voice setup not working on my Mac OS 15.1"

Wondering which model (year) MacBook Pro 15" you are using.

(If needed: See how to: Identify your MacBook Pro model - Apple Support)

Eg: For MacOS 15: Change Personal Voice settings for accessibility on Mac - Apple Support

says:

"Note: Personal Voice is available only on Mac computers with Apple silicon and is not available in all languages. Personal Voice can be used only with Live Speech and with third-party apps that you allow,

such as Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) apps".

Am using a MacBook Pro with an Intel processor to reply, so Personal Voice.is not available on this Mac.

Mac computers with Apple silicon - Apple Support

says:

"Starting with certain models introduced in late 2020,

Apple began the transition from Intel processors to Apple silicon in Mac computers."

ie: MacBook Pro with Apple silicon:"

"MacBook Pro introduced in 2021 or later, plus MacBook Pro (13-inch, M1, 2020)"

If you do use a Mac with Apple Silicon for Personal Voice:

If you want to provide feedback about an accessibility feature on an Apple product,

you can email the Accessibility team: accessibility@apple.com.

All the best :-)

This is a persistent problem for me as well, and I have both last year's Apple silicon MacBook Air and a new iPhone 15 Pro Max on iOS 18. This is clearly a glitch that Apple needs to sort out ASAP.

When you click on 'Create a Personal Voice', a pop-up tells you to check your internet connection for a 233mb download, and if you click either 'Check WiFi' or 'Cancel', it drops the page. It doesn't matter if you're on data or WiFi, the pop-up is an iOS bug.

Please fix this bug, Thank you.
