Apple AirPods 2nd generation with USB-C have started beeping

My Apple AirPods 2nd gen (USB-C) intermittently emit unexpected beeps when I pick them up after several hours of inactivity. The beeping is inconsistent, sometimes occurring and other times not, typically starting after an extended period of non-use.
