Apple TV remote not turning off Tv

I recently upgraded from a google tv to a Apple TV, I love it the only problem is when I press the power button it turns on Apple TV but not the tv itself and shows a hdmi not connected sign. I have to use my old Google tv remote to turn it off completely. I can’t find a fix for it, I looked into the turn on your tv with your remote control and it didn’t help and says I can’t use system control with this configuration what do I do ?
