enable permissions on USB drive

I have a SanDisk Ultra USB 3.0 drive. It says owner permissions are disabled. I've tried erasing and reformatting and that didn't change anything. How do I fix this?

Is this a new drive? ... or did you get it used from another source?

Regardless, are you using this drive with both Macs and PCs?

If so, see if the following will help:

  1. Connect the drive, and then, open the Finder app.
  2. Right-click on the drive's icon, and then, select "Get Info" from the context menu.
  3. In the Get Info window, scroll to the bottom where you’ll see Sharing & Permissions. Look for an option that says Ignore ownership on this volume. If it’s checked, uncheck it. This should allow macOS to respect file ownership on the drive, which can enable permissions.
  4. If the “Ignore ownership on this volume” box was checked and you’ve now unchecked it, try saving a file to the USB drive and check if you can adjust permissions as expected.
