Export a bookmark folder from Safari to Chrome

I have organized my bookmarks in folders and I wanted to just export one folder. With Safari I could find how to export all of the bookmarks.

File > Export > Bookmarks ...

This exports all of the bookmarks as an html file.

However. I only wanted to export selected bookmarks related to a project to the Chrome browser on my Mac.

I found this answer to the question in the Apple Community Discussions about exporting Safari bookmarks and sharing them with someone who uses Chrome. I wanted to transfer them from Safari to Chrome on my own Mac.

Exporting only 1 group of Safari bookmarks, rather than ALL bookmarks

Try selecting the folder in the Bookmarks Sidebar and then drag it to your Desktop to make a copy. E-mail the folder to your friend as an attachment.

This gave me the clue I needed — namely how to export a few bookmarks stored in a folder in Safari. Thanks Eric!

I wanted to reply that it worked but the question was closed so I am reposting it with the process I followed and the result.

So here is what I did.

In Safari

  • Select 'Edit Bookmarks' from the 'Bookmarks' menu.
  • Drag the bookmarks folder you want to export to the desktop.
    • A folder is saved on the desktop with the same name as the folder in the bookmarks. e.g. 'Project 5 bookmarks'
  • Open 'Project 5 bookmarks' folder on the desktop
    • Result > you will see that each bookmark is saved as a .webloc file

In Chrome

  1. Select 'Manage Bookmarks' from the 'Bookmarks' menu
  2. Create a folder in the Chrome Bookmark Manager that you want to store the bookmarks in (optional)
  3. Open the 'Project 5 bookmarks' bookmarks folder on the desktop.
  4. Select all the .webloc files in the desktop folder and drag them to the Chrome Bookmark Manager and drop them into the folder you want to save them in.

NOTE: I tried to drag the whole folder from the desktop to the Chrome Bookmark Manager and the green '+' icon appeared above the folder icon & name that I was dragging so it seemed as if it was going to work but after dropping the folder in the Chrome bookmark manager I could not find the folder among the Chrome bookmarks. Not sure if the problem was with me or Chrome.
