Thunderbolt cable problem

I am trying to connect a 17" older imac with a newer 27" imac.....the thunderbolt cable has the same plug on both ends.....it plugs into the newer thunderbolt socket fine, however the thunderbolt socket on the older imac (with the thunderbolt symbol) is a different socket. How to get around this issue please.

The aim is to use the older imac as a second screen.

Thanks

iMac 27″, macOS 13.6

Thank you....helpful.

You're welcome.

The new imac is a 2000 model with ventura 13.6.1, the older model (proposed screen) 2011 using High Sierra .

What year mode is the new iMac...?

In theory this may work,

Won't work if the new iMac is newer than a 2019 or running anything after macOS Catalina.

but the different thunderbolt cable connection seems to be an issue.

The 2011 iMac has a Mini DisplayPort and the newer one ??? most likely has Thunderbolt/USB-C
