Restoring colorful app icons on the Home Screen after iOS update

After a recent update all of my icons were very colorful (See picture below), then another update took that away. How can I get back the colorful icons like in the picture below? I think maybe some colors were just inverted, but I am not sure. I like that way it looked though and would love to go back to that. Thanks in advance.

Attempt to verify if your color settings are set to automatic mode. It is possible that the dark mode is enabled, and your current color scheme is now in dark mode.

If the dark mode is not enabled, you can check if the contrast functions under accessibility are enabled. If they are, you can disable them to see if you get any color back in your app icons.

I figured it out. All you have to do is this:

You can also customize the color of your app icons on the Home Screen:

  1. Touch and hold the Home Screen background until the icons jiggle.
  2. Tap Edit at the top of the screen.
  3. Choose Customize.
  4. Select a mode for the icons and background: Automatic, Dark, or Light. (I chose Dark)

First, perhaps understand the Apple Support Community is a user-to-user technical forum. Contributors here are all end-users, just like you. Other than the site Moderators, Apple neither monitor nor participate here. As such, if you hope to reach Apple through these forums, you will be disappointed.

Next, you appear to have an entirely different problem to that described by the original author of this thread - leading to subject drift that may confuse matters. Unless you have the same problem, you would generally be best advised to start your own thread. In so doing, you are more likely to receive guidance relevant to your own difficulties.

Returning to your specific problem, if the screen colours appear to be distorted or unnatural, you need to check some key Accessibility settings that are intended to compensate for specific colour-vision issues:

Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size

Ensure that all settings enclosed within the red box above are switched OFF/Disabled.

Otherwise, depending upon your installed version of iOS/iPadOS, you’ll need to look at your Dark Mode settings:

Settings > Display & Brightness > [Appearance]

can it work on an iPad too?

You cannot customise App icon colours unless you have updated your iPad to iPadOS 18.x.

Customize apps and widgets on the iPad Home Screen - Apple Support

Whether or not you are able to update your iPad to a newer version of iOS/iPadOS will be dictated by the iPad model - and the currently installed version of iOS/iPadOS. You can find this information here:

Settings > General > About

Not sure which iPad you have? Identify your iPad model.

iPad2, iPad3 and iPad mini1 - iOS 9.3.5 (WiFi Only models), iOS 9.3.6 (WiFi+Cellular)

iPad4 - iOS 10.3.3 (WiFi Only), iOS 10.3.4 (WiFi+Cellular)

64-bit devices

iPad Air1*, iPad mini2 and iPad mini3* - iOS 12.5.7

iPad Air2, iPad mini4 - iPadOS 15.8.3

iPad5, iPad Pro (9.7"/12.9" 1st generation)* - iPadOS 16.7.10

iPad6, iPad Pro (10.5"/12.9" 2nd generation) - iPadOS 17.7.3

(*) obsolete

Newer models are all able to be updated to the current version - iPadOS 18.2.1

  • iPad Pro 13" (M4)
  • iPad Pro 12.9" (3rd generation and later)
  • iPad Pro 11" (1st generation and later + M4)

Same here… obviously it’s not a background issue. I had the same cool icons after the update… went to bed and woke up to the same boring ones. I’m wondering if it’s something to do with the new apple Ai which I don’t have on my 14. Hopefully someone will know and respond…

Storfury the exact same is happening to me after my recent iOS 18 update on iPhone 15th max. Haven’t dropped it and haven’t let it get wet. There are times when it overheats as well after this update , and the images don’t have as clear or highly defined definition as before . It’s frustrating . Anyone else annoyed by their phone after an 18 update? Seems Like it’s timed perfectly to my Coverage expiring after I year of careful usage , I handle it with kid gloves and the battery is being babied by only charging to 90% . Is is planned obsolescence? Am I supposed to reset something?

I was just getting to know the phone’s coolest features . The clarity was unbelievably awesome . Now it’s as if I’m using a Motorola from 2016.

😖
