How can I make new Preview windows open on second display?

This question has been asked many times and I finally found a solution: In Mac Display Settings, just change the default monitor to your second display.

This may not be the perfect solution for everyone, but it works for my setup. I leave my Macbook Pro for email only and I work off my much bigger second display, so this works.

Of the settings above, the only change I'd make would to turn the first one ("Automatically rearrange...") OFF.

This way, the Spaces will maintain their relative positions always.

It seems that you are unaware of how to actually start Mission Control. There are several ways to do it.

The easiest for me is just to drag up on the trackpad with three or four-fingers (mine is set to four in the Trackpad settings). So I put four fingers on the trackpad and drag. Mission Control looks like this:

Note that I have two Spaces (a.k.a. Desktops) as seen at the top. To add a new one, just click the + button at the top left.

To move between Spaces, I use Contro-LeftArrow and Control-RiightArrow.

Since you have (very wisely) "Displays have separate Spaces", you can do this separately for each display.
