Why FaceTime calls on Mac are not working, and an awkward solution

After today's update I tried to make a FaceTime audio call on my Mac, and it said I couldn't do so because the iPhone wasn't configured to allow it. Then I had to search the topic and found instructions on Apple's site, but they were outdated. So, I called tech support and was told that they are not getting a lot of calls about FT calls no longer working. Here's what seems to be the "solution."

You have to go to the Phone setting — not the FaceTime setting — on the phone and turn on Calls on Other Devices. Then, you can click the audio icon on the Mac, and it coordinates with the call. There's wasn't even a ring on either device before the party answered.

Or, leave Calls on Other Devices turned off, and sometimes you can click on contact's phone icon, and other times you have to click on the info circle and up pops the contact info, and you can then click on call or video, and WhatsApp (in my case) is an alternative option when needed.

The Apple tech rep was super helpful and friends, but she had not even been told that the OS updates had been deployed today, so she asked if I was using a beta OS on the Mac. The FaceTime feedback page has not been updated to include the latest OS version.

Maybe someone has a different experience to report about this.
