SCAM ALERT!

Just received this from email address "se****e@paypal.com" with the reply to address "noreply13@hmigrat". Clearly a scam. Thought everyone should be aware of it.

Excerpted from Effective defenses against malware and other threats - Apple Community:

  • Don't open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
    • ...
    • A variant of the same scam takes the form of an emailed receipt for an iTunes Store or App Store purchase you did not make. The email will contain a link soliciting your Apple ID to confirm the alleged purchase. Both the link and the receipt are fraudulent.

That link contains an example — one of millions that circumnavigate the globe every day. There is nothing new under the sun.

It scares me to think how many people (mostly elderly) fall for these scams.

It's a very lucrative business. What's even more scary is how that revenue is used.

Nothing new. I've gotten at least a few dozen of those over the years.

Still, good for people who believe these things to know. And why, precisely, it should be recognized as a scam.

  1. The @hmigrat email domain clearly doesn't belong to PayPal. Correspondence from PayPay will be from @paypal.com
  2. The huge View and Pay Invoice button will go nowhere near paypal.com
  3. Nor will any of the other links.
  4. If you look it up, the phone number doesn't exist.
  5. Invoice number 0151 !? Hahaha!!!! Apple's invoice system would be in the millions by now.
