Some files show up in iCloud. Are they permanently there or still on my hard drive? If they are only in the iCloud I would like to move them back to my iMAC. I no longe want to use the iCloud app. I want my files on my computer only. What an I do?

You can use iCloud or not. Here are the settings: Change iCloud settings on Mac - Apple Support
Your files are located on your local drive regardless whether or not you are using iCloud.
Did you happen to turn on Desktop and Documents folders in iCloud? Check at Settings > [name on top] > iCloud > Drive > Desktop and Documents Folder, and make sure this is switched off.
