How can I fix my iPod nano (3rd generation)’s black spot?

To add context, the black spot is a common issue with the iPod nano line where the battery swells up and creates a black spot on the screen, eventually shattering or bursting into flames. Is it possible to repair? I understand Apple might not want to repair a 17 year-old iPod, but is it possible to repair it myself? Just so you know, this would only be my second time repairing something. If not, where can I get it fixed?
