Split Clip greyed out in iMovie 10.4.2 MBPro iOS Sonoma 14.6.1

Split Clip is greyed out in iMovie. I've selected the clip, but Split Clip is greyed out. I restarted iMovie while holding Option and Command and I deleted the preferences as suggested. Split Clip still greyed out.

Where is the playhead? We can't see from the screenshot. The most likely reason, from what i can see, is that the playhead is not in the middle of the clip.

The Split Clip command, perhaps surprisingly, does not apply to the clip selected, but to whichever clip the playhead is at. On hindsight, it does make sense - since the split happens at the playhead position.

For example:

Split Clip greyed out - the playhead is at the start of (another) clip

Hi,

Possibly there is a glitch confined to this one project. Try creating a new project and see if the Split Clip feature works there. Also, try using Modify/Split Clip from the main iMovie menu rather than the pop up menu from Control-Clicking on the clip.

As a work around, you can make a duplicate of the clip and trim the two clips back to the point where you wanted to make the split.
