Shared calendars - keeping an event private

Hi, I share my calendars with my family (we are 4) and we use various calendars amongst us. I have a work one which is currently shared with only my wife. I would like to share with my kids so they know when I am available to give them a lift etc but I do not want them to be able to see what I am doing on that appointment, only that I am busy/not available. Is this possible in Apple Calendar…I know it is in other calendars.

Thank you in advance.

As far as I am aware a private event on a shared Apple calendar is not possible. Apple's logic here is that a calendar and its events is either shared or it is not.

The only way you can have both a shared calendar and a private event in iOS/ MacOS calendar is to create the private event in a calendar which you do not share. Both will appear in your devices, but only the shared calendar will be visible with those you share it. If you wanted to block out this time in the shared calendar you would have to have a second event for the same duration - but with more basic data indicating your unavailability.

This is not the most elegant solution, I agree, but it's the only option offered at the moment.
