> Honestly I dont the vpn haters here actually know anything about vpn's. Sure doesnt seem like it.
Kind of a harsh statement.
I'm not a VPN-hater, but I often advise against installing them, most often because people don't actually understand their valid use cases and are operating under a false sense of security.
"A VPN will prevent me from being hacked"
No it won't. It won't make one iota of difference. Not. One.
"A VPN hides my activity from my ISP"
OK, sure, maybe, except you're just handing the keys of your activity from your ISP to your VPN provider *who can see everything you do*. Do you really trust your VPN provider?
"A VPN is faster"
No. No. No. Not in 99.9% of cases. In fact, the opposite is true - when using a VPN, your traffic is sent to the VPN server, who then decodes it and forwards it to the site in question. There are few cases where this would be faster than going to the site directly.
"A VPN hides my location"
True, to some degree, but is a small value prop to most people.
The use cases I hear either hinge around online gaming (and the fear that your opponent will somehow track you down from your IP address, which is way harder to than scripted TV shows would have you believe), or because you're trying to circumvent some kind of geographic lock on sites (e.g. trying to stream a blackout footback game), which borders on the question of legality, which I won't discuss here.
Granted, there are cases where breaking geo-locks can be valuable, and where making your activity from ISP and/or governmental snooping is valid, but for most people VPNs offer few, if any, advantages, and some disadvantages.
If you know you need a VPN, you need a VPN, but otherwise they're usually more trouble than they're worth.
I would recommend asking vpn related questions from other sites than this. The people here seem to have some sort of vandetta against vpn's.
But you can get nordvpn from app store and incognito is available on safari too.
