Installing MAC OS on external HD

I have a 2017 iMac, which the latest OS available is Ventura.

The internal HD isn’t working, and to make my life easier, I am trying to install MACOS on an external SSD Drive.

I already formatted the SSD both with AFPS and Apple Extended Journaling (don’t know which should be the correct).

After that I tried installing MACOS both via internet recovery and also via USB boot, but after it is supposedly installed, it doesn’t show up on initialization disk.

I understand that this last part is fundamental for the process, right?

Any ideas on what should I do to have this SSD showing up on initialization disk options?

God Day;

I recently did this a couple of days ago. I wanted to install Sonoma to an external ssd to see if it would run all my programs with no issue. I also run Ventura with the recent upgrade.

I downloaded a free program from Github (Mist) . After formatting the new ssd drive, I ran Mist and it gives you options of which OS you want to install. After picking the OS,(Sonoma) it installed with no problems. Booting into the OS, I checked all my programs and they ran fine, just had to sign in to apple ID.

Hope this helps
