how to distinguish between old 15w and latest 25w new versions of iPhone Mag Safe chargers

anyone know how to tell the difference between the earlier and latest generation Mag Safe chargers for iPhone 16?

I just bought new Mag Safe charger off Amazon (Sold by and shipped by Amazon)

I suspect I have the older 15 watt version, not the current 25 watt version, because:

  • the back of the box illustration shows a 20 watt charger (the older spec)
  • Settings> About> Apple Mag Safe Charger shows:

Model Number: A2140

Serial Number: (redacted)

Firmware: 258.0.0.0

Hardware: MPFW

  • A 3rd-party battery check app is reporting low watts:

from the box:

MHXH3AM/A

Still -- after talking to 5 Apple support agents with the above info -- I can't get anyone on Apple Phone support to explain how to tell the difference between the the models -- and I suspect I was sold the older max 15W charger

You can identify it by the model number. MagSafe chargers compatible with the 25 watt delivery are models A2580 or A3250.

The one you show is the older model.

one more obvious clue if you only have the round puck-style charger in hand:

the new cables attached to the A2580 A3250 MagSafe iPhone chargers have the new style braided appearance -- not the legacy smooth rubbery type Apple appears to be phasing out (the old A2140 15 watt chargers use the old style smooth cables) -- I just bought both 1m and 2m chargers

further, the A2580 and A3250 box illustrations on the back do not show a wattage next to the power adapter -- both points apparent on the below photo

  • the box top notes: MX6Y3LL/A on the A3250 2m box I photographed
  • iPhone 16 Pro Max> Settings> About> Apple MagSafe Charger notes:

Model Number: A3250

Firmware Version: 128.0

Hardware version: REVA

Yes. Correct.

I don't see a like or up not option on your post -- I am Ising ancient Mojave/iMac 2107 hardware -- will hit it when I get to a newer device

I presume you already did it, but you can press the up arrow under the post to like it, and up-vote it. Thanks.

thanks -- was what I suspected -- I have already order a replacement directly from Apple Store web order and will compare the box and specs

Amazon order going back with a warning they are selling old models -- I usually have good luck buying Apple off AMZ (sold and shipped by AMZ) in this case I needed to do my homework

The newer model doesn’t have that thick mold piece behind the USBC plug or under the round MagSafe charger. If you look at the picture the thick mold piece is on both ends of the cable, therefore it’s the 1st generation MagSafe charger. You can also see that thick mold piece on the front of the box where the wire goes into the MagSafe charger which confirms that it’s the 1st generation charger. The new braided cable doesn’t have this mold piece on neither end. I hope this is helpful to others.

The first clue, for me, would have been the "2020 Apple Inc." in the bottom left corner of the box. I dont order any electronics from Amazon, anymore. I ordered an Apple Keyboard and mouse, because I didnt want to drive 40 miles to the apple store, and I could get it in an hour. When I received it, I put the serial number into apples database, and the serial number didnt exist for the keyboard or the mouse. Frustrated, I returned them, and went to the apple store the next day, and just for my own piece of mind, I checked the serial numbers and they were legit.

Yes also the Amazon listing actually has the model number. So this is buyer error, not seller error. Always check model numbers especially when you know there are two versions. Best it also still sells the 15W ones and they are priced cheaper and there is nothing wrong with selling a product that still works. On best buy you’ll see that a distinguishing feature of the 25W version is they actually put 25W in the title as does the Apple Store. One would expect once Amazon has inventory they’d be doing the same.

you are late to the discussion -- Amazon updated their listing the day after after I reported the missing information on their website report link and on the phone with their agent -- the AMZ listing is correct now as you have found

the easy answer is the 25w model has the braided cord -- the older versions have the smooth rubbery cords
