Notes app is crashing after iOS 18 update on my iPhone

Looks like you also have to delete all the notes as well for the sync to work—looks like there is no other option. Did you do that and it worked?

Found a work around in the meantime—open iCloud website on your phone—I am now able to access all of my notes.

Unfortunately this routine fix for things is not working. Apple Support ran thru all these usual fixes—after I had done so over a couple weeks w/o solving. Then Notes kicked in, for no clear reason. I have had 2 rounds of Notes failing. First wouldn’t even load on iPhone from iCloud, sync, tho iPad and Mac fine. Second time, right now, iPhone & iPad Notes freeze after initially opening one note. Clearly it’s iOS 18.

I wanted to provide an update on the recent issue. It appears to have resolved itself spontaneously. This may have been due to a necessary synchronization with iCloud. The application is now functioning correctly. I hope this resolution persists.

I’m also a big “Notes” user and can’t access my notes. I have very sensitive information that I store on Notes and constantly use it (daily) but can’t access since the last iOS 18 update. This is unacceptable. If someone can advise a work around it would be greatly appreciated. Please correct this issue as soon as possible. Thank you!

FYI .. it crashes on my iPad as well as my iPhone.

According to Support, they will not have a patch for it for another month.

One month is a long time for us not using Notes. Has anyone heard when will the patch be available?

I just updated to iOS 18.1.1 and am having this issue. The notes app is something I use multiple times a day and this is seriously frustrating. I tried the fix of unsyncing and re syncing suggested by a few of the comments here and it seems to have done nothing. I have one particularly long note that I use a journal that just instantly freezes the app when I click on it.

I had the same problem. So what I did was opened notes on the iCloud website. Copied and those long notes (I had four that were causing problems) and pasted each of them into a new note, renaming them too. Then opened the app to see if they worked which they did. Then I deleted the offending notes. I’m convinced this is an iCloud problem. Something happens in the syncing process. Hope this helps.

People seem to have solutions for iCloud notes but I really need one for notes "On My iPad." I've got a long note that does the crashing and freezing thing, problem is it's only saved to my iPad, meaning these solutions won't help. I could theoretically fix it if I could move it to an iCloud folder, but I can't, every time I've tried both iCloud and Microsoft folders are greyed out. If anyone could provide a solution for either of these I'd be extremely grateful. I don't think Apple's gonna do anything about it considering this thread is a couple months old.

There may be something right about very long, large notes affecting Notes syncing or freezing. Try offloading and see if that helps. But I suspect other bugs from iOS 18, like maybe the relatively new feature of folders, or just having tons of notes. In any case, the freezing comes and goes so an Apple fix is needed.

I appreciate the response but one of my problems is that I'm not currently capable of offloading it. Besides moving it to another notes folder or deleting it, all the other controls can only be accessed when the note is open. I cannot open the note without freezing and crashing the app.

I have the same issue, but looks like it got fixed after I recorded a call and left it in Notes. Call a number where a machine answers you. For example, your Bank’s Customer Care. Hit call record button on the top left corner of the screen. Record the call for 10 seconds and exit. The recording will remain in your Notes. Recheck its there. Close everything and re-launch the Notes app. See what happens! This fixed my issues with Notes!

This worked for me…. Longest notes were crashing. Smaller ones opened ok. For the longest notes, click and hold on the note that won’t open, delete it, go to “recently delete” notes folder, click and hold then move it back into the notes folder…. Then you can see it again! Hope this works!

A few months ago I had an issue with pages my recently files kept disappearing . When I switched off the wifi and went on to the network spectrum it’s been working fine . The issue isn’t still resolved but at least I can manage it . I’ll try and see if that works for Notes . You never know … fingers crossed . 🤞

I have a SE 2020 on ios 18-18.2 and the thing that kept my notes from crashing (after upgrading to ios 18.0) which happened in 10-15 seconds was going to Settings, Apps, Notes and then turn on "On My iPhone" Account (this was the last thing that I tried after spending days trying everything under the sun to fix the crashing problem. Now the notes is working fine.
