  1. QuickTime Player updates with the OS, so that you always have the version that fits your system software.
  2. QuickTime Player should open on double-click, just like all other applications.
  3. For convenient access, you may drag any application icon to the Dock, or remove rarely used apps from the Dock.
  4. QuickTime Player would start with an Open… dialog box, to select any previous compatible file. If you intend to do something different, then click Cancel, and then e.g. choose a function from the menu.
  5. Alternatively, you can double-click a QuickTime file to open it in the application.
  6. Alternatively, you can drag-and-drop a compatible document onto the application icon.
  7. Be careful where you click after the app has launched, as QuickTime Player will close itself when it has no open documents, and Finder or some other app is brought to the foreground.
  8. If you get nothing, then try restarting in Safe Mode, to disable any third party software that loads as your Mac starts up. How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support. ‘Safe mode’ can help you to determine whether an issue is caused by software that loads as your Mac starts up.
  9. If you get nothing after that, then try logging in to macOS as a different user. You may need to create this additional user first in System Settings. How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac - Apple Support. If an issue stops happening when you log out of your macOS user account and log in with another, the issue could be related to the files or settings in your user account.
  10. Please let us know the results of these tests, for suggestions on steps after that.
