I hit the sign in with apple. It removed all my saved icons from my desktop. How can I go back to the old way? I do have time machine. Can I just go back a few hours? How do I do it?
I did this on my iphone. It effected both the phone and the imac.
I have an imac running Catalina.

Easy, restore from a Time Machine backup! Restore your Mac from a backup or Use Time Machine to restore deleted files or older files,
Mac OS will NOT create the behavior you describe unless a user (possibly you) have added something to cause that problem. I'd also suggest doing the following:

I figured out how to recover what I changed from time machine. And yes, it was the new apple "simple sign in" that I tried. I didn't like it.
