I had no issues a week ago but now my iMovie won't recognize my Sony camcorder I have tried on 2 different older macbooks with compatible versions of iMovie with my camcorder. But still iMovie can't seem tor recogniz the tape footage to transfer. Is it possible this is a wire issue? or something internal with the camera... Any and all advice is helpful <3

Do these older macs actually have firewire ports? I did not know that any macs with firewire would run Monterrey.
If you don't have a firewire port, how are you connecting from FW to the Mac?

Hi,
VHS is an analog, not digital, format. Therefore you would need a video converter to convert the analog to digital, unless your VHS camera has that capability. Otherwise your Mac won't recognize the tape.

What model camcorder is it?
What model Mac & what version of macOS are you using?
Have you tried shutting down everything & restarting?
Have you tried a different Firewire (aka iLink) cable?
Is this happening with one specfic tape or multiple tapes?
"lightning?" Is this a Mac or a phone?
If this is Thunderbolt, are you using just the TB1 adapter or using the TB1->TB3 adapter? If you are daisychaining the adapters make sure you are using a Thunderbolt port and not USB-C.
I did already! I have a MacBook Air from 2017 I'm on MacOS Monterey, and I use a Sony DCR TRV340 NTSC. I've tried 2 computers and a new firewire cable. I plan to try a new thunderbolt to firewire converter.
Try importing into QuickTimePlayer instead of directly into iMovie. The major difference between importing into iMovie versus QTP is that importing into QTP would eliminate the scene breaks, so that you would have one continuous clip.
Importing into iMovie 10 from tape based cameras can be hit or miss. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. You may not be doing anything wrong.

Yes that's the way I've always done it! I use a lightning port to firewire converter. I am more so looking for ways to troubleshoot! Not how to initially how to do it
Sometimes I have to start playing on the camcorder and then hit "record" on the Mac.
Yes I meant thunderbolt sorry..I am only using thunderbolt to firewire. I just can't figure out if it's cable, camera or tape issue.
