To double check, is the spreadsheet “Locked” or “Password Protected”? If it’s locked, anyone can actually unlock it and there are a few ways you can go about it. One way is on a Mac, open the spreadsheet. In the Menu Bar under Arrange, click Unlock (or click Lock if that is the only option). This will bring a prompt asking if you want to unlock the spreadsheet.

If the spreadsheet is password protected, then you need the password. Unfortunately, there is no way around that.
