Macbook Pro(2010) HDD as external drive

My A1286 bought in 2010 couldn't be revived. The LCD slowly crumbled due to disuse and caused the board to fail. This was shown to me when they dismantled it. The skill level of the service centre wasn't good enough to fix this. The display failed a few years back and it was unutilized.

Now the HDD seems to be in pristine condition. Can I now connect this to my newer Macbook Pro and retrieve the data in a few folders ? Is there a recommendation ?

I believe I can use it as an external drive ?

Thanks.

Search "SATA drive adapter USB" and you will find devices similar to this:

Sabrent SATA to USB Cable - Amazon

With this you can connect the drive to you Mac to retrieve data and/or continue to use it as an external drive.

Another option is to buy an external USB case for that drive for the same purpose.

It will work in an external enclosure or with a bare drive adapters as others have pointed out, but will not be fast. The 2010 Macbook Pro shipped with an SATA 3GB internal HD.

Faster 6GB SATA drives were not used until 2011 Macbook Pro models. I just tested the original 5400 RPM SATA 3GB HD I removed from my older Macbook Pro. It posted ~50MB sec transfers in a US 3 enclosure attached to a USB3 computer port.

A newer 5400RPM SATA 6GB drive on the same port is showing 130MB/sec, which is still sow by todays standards.

Still, my slowpoke works fine for the the simple tasks I have assigned it. Be sure to match the tasks you give it with its limited speed capabilities..

For thought...

Reading the Hard Drive:

Use an Apple-Compatible Hard Drive Reader (also known informally as "a toaster". Get one on Amazon: mac hard drive toaster

The drive you pictured shows a standard SATA connector, No adapters needed to move that drive to a drive enclosure, a "toaster-style" enclose where the drive sticks out the top, and just a cable-adapter that stays messy and open on your desk.

This is a 'Toaster-style' drive 'enclosure':

...

Years ago, the preferred interface to the computer-side of the 'adapter/enclosure' was FireWire. Today, USB has become much faster and firewire support is almost gone. The preferred interface is USB-3 if possible, but older USB will suffice for rotating drives.

If the adapter/enclosure has a USB computer-side interface, it does not need anything more to be Macintosh compatible.
