“Payment cards are not supported for this account” issue

My son is 15, has an iPhone 12 mini updated to the latest software (iOS 17.6.1) and is properly signed in with his Apple ID. We live in Slovakia and he is also part of our device family (cause he has a child’s account). Our problem is, that even tho he has a physical debit card with a bank account, he can’t add the card to the Wallet. When he taps the plus button in the top right corner, a message saying “CANNOT ADD CARD: Payment cards are not supported for this account” pops up. Can anyone help me solve this?

I don’t think that’s the case - the message shows up right after I press the plus button. I don’t even get to enter any kind of card information.

But thanks for your reply

I’m sorry, but I think you don’t understand (or maybe I don’t). When I try to begin the process of adding a card, the message shows up RIGHT AWAY. I don’t even press anything else, I also don’t get to enter any card information. Anyway, my bank IS supported in my country (I searched the list you sent me), so that would probably be no problem if I got to a point where I enter the card information.

Correct, because you device shares information about your location and that generates and automatic response to the request, pressing the plus button. You can search it online and you can also search the first links I gave you. I’ll post them again for your convenience.

Your bank is not listed as being supported.

The point is, the law may allow a child to have an account but not allow them to add it to an electronic wallet. I don’t know for certain, but your bank most definitely will know. Apple sets its minimum at 13, but individual countries may impose stricter limits. Your bank should know whether they permit it or not and the minimum age requirements. A simple phone call to your bank should resolve the issue.
