Both originally shipped with some version of Snow Leopard, which means that they would have come with recovery DVDs to use in the event that you needed to reinstall the original operating system. Snow Leopard preceded the introduction of Recovery partitions, and Apple never made Snow Leopard available for electronic download. Some of the Mid 2010 MBPs shipped with an early version of Lion.
For both, High Sierra is the end of the line.
Unless you can find the recovery discs that came with the machine, or have another old Mac which you can use to prepare an external startup drive, it's going to be hard to get either machine going.
