How do I sync devices with iTunes when no device icon is appearing?

I just got an iphone 15. Some, but very little, of my itunes library transferred to the new phone.

This has happened before and was resolved by syncing the new device with the library on the laptop.

This time, however, no device icon appears in the itunes screen on the laptop.

So I have no way to sync, at least in the way I know.

The version of itunes on the laptop might be too old to be compatible with the new phone, but I see no way to update it.

It appears that the only songs that transferred are some but not all of the songs that I purchased from itunes.

None of the 90% of the albums in my library, that I loaded myself from CD's into the library, are present on my phone.

Those are the ones I hope to get from syncing.
