(US$100.00 * 0.75) - £10.00 is valid to you and me but Numbers does not like it.
I can use an intermediate column to get the right result but is there away to get Numbers to do the above math without moaning about the currency's being different?

"Valid" perhaps, but neither you nor I can solve that equation properly without one more piece of information: the conversion rate. That requires going to the Internet (or elsewhere) to get the rate. Numbers has the CURRENCYCONVERT function which gets the "closing" conversion rate of the day before from Yahoo! Finance. You can use it in your formula.
Obviously your 0.75 can be interpreted different ways. I saw it as "I have 75% of US$100 minus £10.00.
Use the VALUE function around the US$100. Format the result to be £.
But I’ve provided the conversion rate I want to use of 0.75.
